Getting Around

The key is learning your basic directions, north/south and east/west. One easy rule-of-thumb is to always keep in your mind where the beaches are in relation to your current position. The beaches are pretty much always west. Another easy tip is to learn the north/south and east/west dividing lines within the city.

In Clearwater, Gulf to Bay Blvd (a.k.a. US Hwy 60) is the North/South divider, while US 19 remains the East/West divider. Gulf to Bay will carry you, as the name implies, from the base of the Courtney Campbell Causeway - Clearwater's connector to Tampa on the bayside- to Gulf Blvd in Clearwater Beach. Gulf to Bay also takes you directly through downtown Clearwater.

A word of caution in traveling US19 in Clearwater - several of the major intersections of this highway through town are rated as some of Florida's most dangerous. Make no mistake about it, these ratings were earned. US 19 is an exceptionally busy stretch of road, carrying literally hundreds of thousands of vehicles daily. Hang on tight to the wheel, pay attention, and put down the cell phone. These hoards of drivers know exactly where they are going, and they are not taking their time getting there.
